A plea to the government of the state of Victoria to save the Australian Jewish land Settlement Trust from impending bankruptcy was answered today by the government in the form of a plan for the organization of a cooperative bank among the settlers at Berwick, one of the settlements of the Trust, whose colonists have been hard hit by the fall in the prices of primary products.
Last night special officers of the Victorian department of agriculture attended a meeting of the Victorian Jewish community and outlined a plan for the creation of a cooperative bank at Berwick. The Berwick settlers have convened a special meeting for tomorrow to take action on this suggestion.
The Australian Jewish Land Settlement Trust, which has for some years been engaged in promoting Jewish agricultural settlement in Australia, founded two such settlements, Berwick and Shepparton. Because of the unparalleled crisis in the Australian fruit industry, both settlements have been experiencing such difficulties that the future of the Jewish land settlement undertaking in Australia was seriously endangered.
