Movement to Revive Rabbinical Arbitration Courts

The old rabbinical tribunals of the past, where the Rabbi sat as arbitrator of disputes among his people, are to be revived in Minneapolis, under plans undertaken by the Jews of Minneapolis, led by the B’nai B’rith lodge. Jewish attorneys in that city will cooperate in this effort to settle disputes out of court.

The plans suggested are:

A tribunal of conciliation in which the conciliator will hear both sides and make recommendations which will have the moral

support of the community.

A court of arbitration operating under formal statute provisions and with authority and power similar to the district court, appeals from whose decision may be taken directly to the district court.

A body of laymen chosen from the Jewish community to act as arbitrators at a nominal salary, or none at all.

Josiah E. Brill heads the five attorneys who are to draft the rules for the proposed tribunal.
