Edgar Ansel Mowrer for ten years was chieftain of the group of foreign correspondents covering Germany. He was forced to leave the country a few months ago by the Reich government whose objection to his book, “Germany Puts the Clock Back,” was based on the contention that he had deliberately misrepresented facts and was acting as a “propagandist”. The ceremonies attending his dismissal are journalistic history, and Mr. Mowrer, whose reputation as a newspaper man is attested by the award of $500 given by the Pulitzer Prize Committee in 1933 for “best foreign correspondence”, will take up his duties as correspondent for the Chicago Daily News in January at Tokyo.
Interviewed by the Jewish Daily Bulletin on conditions in Germany, Mr. Mowrer’s candid rejoinders disclosed the amazing degree to which repression in the Reich has gone.
The substance of his opinions is as follows. Nazi-ism is in Germany to stay, regardless of the economic boycott. The American people should take special precautions to prevent the spread of the movement which is making headway in nearly every nation in Europe. There is no hope for the Jews in Germany, the young must go and the older German Jews must stay and suffer. The mass of German people have been “duped” into submission to Hitler, and “they will not awaken until it is too late.” The chances of another war are growing, and within a few years Germany will have an army able to cope with any in the world.
Mr. Mowrer said that the best tool of the German government is the press which is today completely subservient.
