Mrs. Betty Talmadge, wife of Sen. Herman E. Talmadge (D. Ga.), was turned away from the Soviet Embassy last Wednesday where she said she had an appointment with Ambassador Anatoly F. Dobrynin and Mrs. Dobrynin. Mrs. Talmadge, accompanied to the Embassy by Mrs. James Rothschild, wife of Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild of the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation of Atlanta, and David Amdur of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Atlanta, carried a petition with 5000 signatures of women from Georgia in behalf of Soviet Jewish “prisoners of conscience.” Mrs. Talmadge appeared at the Embassy wearing a brass medallion in the shape of a Star of David. inscribed on one side of the medallion was the name of Anatoly Goldfeld, a Jewish prisoner. On the other side was the slogan “Let My People Go.” in English and Hebrew.
