Thrift House, the shop at 9 West 57th Street, for the sale of contributed merchandise of all sorts, which Mrs. Julius Ochs Adler and a group of other prominent women have organized to raise funds for philanthropic purposes, opened yesterday with a great rush of customers. The proceeds of the shop are to go to the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies which raises funds for the support of 91 affiliated charitable agencies.
All sorts of merchandise contributed by individuals and wholesale and retail shops were offered for sale, from shoes to jewelry and wearing apparel to furniture. Bargains were eagerly sought and the satisfaction with which some of the customers left the shop seemed to indicate that they thought they had found some.
A large staff of volunteer sales people, merchandise managers, cashiers and others were on hand to assist Mrs. Adler with the work. The staff was inadequate, however, to deal with the first day’s crowd and Mrs. Adler said that she planned to get additional volunteers to help.
The floor above the store will be pressed into service beginning next week for office and stock room purposes so that additional counter space can be made available within the store.
The sales force is in charge of a captain for each day of the week. Mrs. Paul Block is captain for Monday, with Mrs. Joseph G. Gage as associate captain; on Tuesday Mrs. Samuel Stroock is captain with Mrs. V. Theodore Loewenstein as associate; on Wednesday, Mrs. Walter E. Beer is captain; and on Thursday Mrs. Percy W. Lansburgh is captain, with Mrs. Allie S. Freed as associate. On Friday, the captain is Mrs. Louis Surut, with Mrs. Aaron Rabinowitz as associate.
