Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman has given Williams College here an endowment gift of $1,250,000, income from which will be used to provide scholarships for students as a memorial to her late husband, it was announced here yesterday. This is the largest gift ever received by the college from an individual.
Governor Lehman, a Williams College graduate of the Class of 1899, had long taken an interest in his alma mater. As part of the memorial to Mr. Lehman, the college’s president, John E. Sawyer, said he would meet each year with recipients of Lehman scholarships and tell them of his service to the college and the nation.
Last January, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Altschul of Stamford, Conn; gave the college’s 175th Anniversary Fund $500,000 to establish a new professor ship at Williams in memory of Mr. Lehman. Mr. Altschul is the brother of Mrs. Lehman, the former Edith Altschul. Mrs. Altschul is Mr. Lehman’s niece.
