Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt was presented here with a Torah by the Conference of Jewish Women. The Scroll was given to her as an award to the “Woman of the Year.” The Torah was brought to the U.S. from a DP camp in Germany and is said to have been transcribed by scribes in the days of Frederick the Great. In accepting the Scroll, Mrs. Roosevelt emphasized that the struggle for equality must become a matter of concern for every American.
