Displaced persons and refugees up to the maximum of the quotas provided for in the present immigration law should be permitted to enter the United States, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, American delegate to the United Nations and chairman of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, declared here today at a rally launching the 1947 campaign of the Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. She added that the present immigration law should not be changed.
Asserting that the future of the DP’s in Europe depends upon what the United States does now, Mrs. Roosevelt urged that the government accept its full share “of whatever we are asked to do for the unfortunate people who have suffered more than we have.” Referring to life in the DP camps as an “unnatural existence,” she declared that it “saps the hope and vitality of people.”
