Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, in a statement today, urged Congress to pass the bill asking for a $150,000,000 grant-in-aid for Israel. She emphasized that the bill “is one that will assist in insuring that Israel remains a bastion of democracy and will continue to offer hope and freedom for those Jews who today find themselves under intolerable conditions.”
Last Sunday Mrs. Roosevelt purchased a State of Israel Bond in honor of a new granddaughter of Henry Morgenthau. Jr. In purchasing the bond, Mrs. Roosevelt emphasized that “the success of the Israel Bond Issue will enable the new nation to realize its many opportunities for industrial and agricultural growth.”
“In strengthening the economy of Israel,” she said, “we are also strengthening its capacity to serve humanity and to serve the highest interests of democracy and world peace. It seems to me that through the loan which America can now provide in the form of the purchase of Israel Bonds, all of us can help bring the United States and Israel together in a partnership of mutual understanding and cooperation.” A testimonial dinner will be tendered to Mrs. Roosevelt on June 25 the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York of which she is chairman for the mon of June.
