The United Jewish Appeal announced the receipt of a special gift of $500,000 from Mrs. Felix M. Warburg which has been made by her in addition to her regular annual contribution of $150,000. This special gift was made by Mrs. Warburg to mark her 75th birthday–which fell yesterday–and also the 80th birthday of her late husband which was on January 14.
The total $650,000 contribution was made through the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. While larger groups gifts have been made to the U.J.A., notably by the Rosenwald family, Mrs. Warburg’s contribution is the largest individual gift ever received by the United Jewish Appeal.
In a letter which accompanied her gift, Mrs. Warburg indicated that she was making it because of the urgent need for philanthropic funds to help large numbers of recent immigrants in Israel to leave reception camps there and to integrate them quickly into the life of the country. She expressed the wish that her gift be used to provide both housing and educational facilities for the immigrants.
In making her contribution, Mrs. Warburg said she felt her gift could be “of practical help to the people of Israel who are making a real contribution to democracy in these critical times by continuing to share their freedom with thousands of immigrants from places of oppression.”
