A gift of $1,250,000 for the construction of a new surgical center building, and an extra contribution of $40,000 for the purchase and installation of an “artificial heart” with necessary related equipment, were given today to Mt. Sinai Hospital by Henry J. Gaisman, New York philanthropist.
According to an announcement by officials of the hospital, the new building, to bear the name of Mr. Gaisman and his wife, Mrs. Catherine Vance Gaisman, will be a ten-story structure adding to the institution’s facilities 11 operating rooms, automatic carrier equipment, a sterile surgical division and other facilities. Mt. Sinai, which has a capacity of 1,136 beds, performs 20,000 surgical procedures a year and treats 130,000 persons annually.
