Mount Sinai Hospital here yesterday received three grants totalling $204, 491 for research projects on various aspects of poliomyelitis. The grants were made by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
One grant will be used to continue studies, begun by Dr. Gregory Schwartzman, chief microbiologist at the hospital, on the role of cortisone and other hormones in influencing polio infection in animals. A second grant will be used to investigate the fluid balance in the body during an attack of polio to determine whether changes of the water content occur and, if they do, what damage may result.
