Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak started a two-day visit to the United Kingdom during which he hopes to drum up support for his peace plan. Mubarak was Queen Elizabeth’s guest at a state lunch at Buckingham Palace and will dine tonight with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street.
Egyptian officials say Mubarak hopes to obtain Britain’s backing for his peace plan and a promise of British pressure on the United States, which Mubarak earlier accused of having “a defeatist approach.”
The Egyptian President conferred with French President Francois Mitterrand on his way to Washington last week but failed to obtain the full French backing on which he had counted.
Mubarak is due to meet tomorrow once again with Thatcher and other British officials with whom he will also discuss trade relations between the two countries.
