Much interest is displayed in political and journalistic circles over the deliberations of the Permanent Mandates Commission of the League of Nations now in session here concerning the petition of the Zionist Executive in the matter of the Western Wall.
The Commission started its deliberations on the question Saturday. While no official statement was issued, the “Journal de Geneve,” influential League newspaper, stated Sunday that it learned on good authority, that the Commission decided to leave the matter to the British Government, following a declaration of intention by the Mandatory that it plans to solve the question in a spirit passifying both Jews and Moslems.
The correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns, however, that this statement of the ” Journal de Geneve” was premature. The Mandates Commission continued its discussion of the subject at its session Monday afternoon. Dr. William Rappard, Swiss member and well known authority on Mandate questions, acted as rapporteur. The session is, as usual, closed and the result will be published only after the Council of the League of Nations accepts the Commission’s report.
It was stated that a proposal made at the session that in view of the unusual interest taken in the matter, a statement be issued for immediate publication after the decision is reached, was rejected.
Again the information was repeated today on good authority that the Commission will express its regret at the occurrences and go on record as hoping that the British Government will find a solution which will be fair and just to both contending parties.
