The Daily Sketch reported today that the exiled ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin el Husseini, who was leader of the Palestine Arab revolt from 1936 to 1938, had thrown in his lot with Italy and was contacting Col. Gransini in Syria.
The Italians, it was reported, promised the Mufti the expulsion of all Jews and British from Palestine, plus leadership in a future administration of the Holy Land, in return for inciting an Arab revolt in Palestine, organized from Syria. The Mufti has been invited to Rome to discuss plans, it was said.
Haj Amin, who was head of the Moslem Supreme Council and of the Arab Higher Committee in Palestine, escaped to Syria in October, 1937, when the British sought to arrest him as an instigator of Palestinian disorders. In October, 1939, he went to Baghdad.
