The Metropolitan Opera was to open its season Saturday night with “Aida.” A Verdi opus is the traditional curtain raiser at the Thirty-ninth Street music cathedral.

The farewell performance of the English Singers will occur Sunday afternoon at the Town Hall.

The first week’s program at the Met includes “Hansel Und Gretel,” “Die Walkure,” “Manon,” “La Gioconda,” “Siegfried,” “Lucia di Lammermoor” and “Faust.”
