Muslims in the Israeli city of Nazareth began dismantling a protest tent on a disputed plot of land ahead of a ceremony for a mosque that is slated to be built at the site under a government-brokered compromise. Public Security Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami last Friday said the dispute regarding land near the Church of the Annunciation is being blown out of proportion and that preparations for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Israel were continuing despite reports the Vatican may cancel the trip in protest against the construction of the mosque.
