Emphatic denial of the reports current in international circles of Italy’s intention to claim the mandate for Palestine was made by Benito Mussolini.
The denial was called forth by a report purporting to rest on the result of negotiations conducted between Mussolini and German Foreign Minister Stressemann.
In a press interview Mussolini couched his denial in the form of a reference to the tastes of Italian families. “Every family used to believe it was necessary to possess a decorative vase. The uselessness of this vase is now being recognized. We do not want to have a Syrian or Palestinian vase for our Fascist family,” he declared.
