Italian anti-Semitism is motivated by Premier Benito Mussolini’s need for a “whipping boy” to take the minds of the people off troubles at home, declares Benedict Mulligan, writing in the current issue of America, Catholic weekly. He adds that the anti-Semitism is not in keeping with the mentality and ideals of the Italian people and that it has not made a good impression on them.

“The Duce has angered his people and indignant Italians may be dangerous,” the article asserts. “Why should the Duce run such risks merely to imitate a man who has drawn on himself and his policies the scorn of the world?”
