The New York City Board of Education and the National Conference of Christians and Jews will establish next September at least eight special centers for the promotion of better relations among the city’s religious and racial groups, it was announced here yesterday by Dr. William Jansen, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Everett Clinchy, president of the N.C.C.J., and Deputy Mayer John J. Bennett.
The project will train school and communal leaders needed to reduce intergroup tensions. The centers will be operated by 60 instructors from the city’s schools who will receive special training in the Intergroup Relations Division of Teachers College, Columbia University, The program, believed to be the most extensive of its kind ever undertaken, visualizes the eventual establishment of some 20 centers throughout tie city.
