The New York Board of Education has taken a positive attitude toward the introduction of Yiddish language study in the municipal high schools, it was announced here tonight at the opening session of the International Conference on Yiddish Studies, which is taking place at Columbia University.
A communication from the Board of Education was read at the session by Prof. M. Weinreich, a City College. It said that the Board of Education has no objection to organizing clubs for the study of Yiddish in junior and senior high schools, if there are students interested in such studies. The policy of the New York Board of Education has been to establish clubs of students seeking to study a foreign language. If the clubs prove successful, the foreign language is introduced in classroom instruction. The communication was addressed to S. Dingol, chairman of the Committee for Studying Yiddish in Municipal Schools.
