“What decades of Czarist persecution could not do, Communist totalitarianism seems on the verge of accomplishing–the stifling of every form of Jewish expression, the total extinction of Jewish existence,” declared will Herberg, author, lecturer and noted authority on Communist activities in the United States, before a luncheon meeting yesterday of the New York chapter of the American Jewish Committee.
Mr. Herberg, who directs research and educational activities for a branch of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, denied the claim that the Soviet Union guarantees Jews equal rights and has wiped out anti-Semitism. “The record of Communism in Soviet Russia and in the satellite states proves that it is bitterly hostile to everything Jewish and to every form of Jewish existence,” he said.
