Students at City College here were today signing a petition demanding the dismissal of Prof. William E. Knickerbocker who has been charged with anti-Semitism. The petition was yesterday drawn up and approved at a meeting of more than 2,000 students on the campus. Classes were called off as a result of the meeting.
The meeting was arranged by the Student Council after a demonstration outside the office of College President Harry N. Wright and an all-night sit-down strike by students who threatened to “sit down and stay down until we get action.” The students have demanded that the college and the Board of Higher Education act on the Knicherbocker case within a week. The wave of indignation was set off by a Board decision earlier this week, exonerating Prof. Knickerbocker.
