N.Y. Congressmen in Israel to Study Absorption Problems of Soviet Jews

Two New York Congressmen who are co-sponsoring a bill to grant Israel $85 million to help in the absorption of Jewish refugees from the Soviet Union, met today with Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir. Absorption Minister Natan Peled and other officials of the government and Jewish Agency to learn at first hand the nature of absorption problems. Rep. Jonathan Bingham, a Democrat, and Rep. Seymour Halpern, a Republican, also talked to recent immigrants from the Soviet Union.

The American law-makers will officially represent the United States at the funeral tomorrow of Knesset Speaker Reuben Barkatt. The two Congressmen are also scheduled to visit reception centers and resettlement areas and discuss employment, settlement procedures and costs facing Soviet Jews in Israel. Both are members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Near East subcommittee.
