New York City police today installed a special telephone, advertising the number (EV 8-2304) widely, in a stepped-up effort to apprehend the killers who, a week ago, beat to death Rabbi Bernard Eisdorfer, a prominent disciple of the Satmar Rebbe. Police Lieutenant Alfred W. Dougherty, of the precinct embracing the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn where the Hassidic scholar had been robbed and fatally injured, said the special telephone will be manned day and night, in the hope that some information might be received, possibly leading to the arrest of the hoodlums who killed Rabbi Eisdorfer.
The death has raised protests, not only from about 10,000 Hassidim in Williamsburg but also from all sections of New York City. Today, the Brooklyn Jewish Community Council, declaring it was speaking “as the voice of the organized Brooklyn Jewish community,” requested that the city take “swift action to put at rest the fears of citizens of the Williamsburg Jewish community.” The Council also asked that District Attorney Edward Silver probe the outrage.
