Jewish day schools in New York State will receive $500,000 worth of textbooks as a result of a state aid to education bill just signed by Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, executive president of the Agudath Israel of America said today.
Rabbi Sherer said the bill provides textbooks for children attending all non-public schools in the state from kindergarten through the sixth grade. Non-public school students from the seventh through 12th grades have been receiving free textbooks from the state since 1966.
The constitutionality of the original textbook law was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court and its extension to the lower grades is not expected to become embroiled in any legal controversy. Rabbi Sherer said. The Supreme Court has in recent years declared unconstitutional various state laws providing other forms of public assistance to non-public schools.
