Assemblyman Monroe Flegenheimer this week-end revealed that he will introduce a bill in the New York Legislature to prevent schools in this state from accepting “bigots’ bequests.”
The Manhattan Assemblyman said his bill would deprive schools accepting bequests to be used “only for certain select groups” of real estate tax exemption. “We cannot have laws on our books which tell colleges not to refuse admission because of race, color or religion and, at the same time, make it possible for these institutions to accept gifts which tell them that these bequests are to be used only for certain select groups,” he said.
