In response to inquiries made by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, an official denial has been issued on the report in the “New York Times” of April 8 to the effect that the Palestine government is working on a plan to divide Palestine into cantons, similar to the canton system in Switzerland. The official denial termed the report as without foundation.
The report had declared that the government’s plan, which was to be submitted to London, called for the establishment of an experimental canton by the creation of an all-Jewish district to include Tel Aviv and forty Jewish colonies in the environs of Petach Tikvah, Rishon Le Zion and Rehoboth, which would be organized into a compact group with a total Jewish population of 70,000. The report also said that Major J. F. Campbell, commissioner for the Southern district of Palestine, would probably be named special commissioner of this initial canton which would be named “Judaea.”
