The Italian anti Semitic laws are being applied “with out conviction” the New York Times said editorially today in commenting upon the recent admission to Italy of Jewish refugees from Germany.
Declaring the anti Jewish legislation has been “honored in the breach as much as in the observance” the Times continued. “This does not mean that the racial policy has been officially modified. On the contrary regulations limiting the activities of Italian Jews are constantly being promulgated. But it does indicate that the policy inaugurated without reason is applied without conviction. It is impossible to imagine foreign Jews either seeking or receiving even temporary asylum in Germany. The influx into Italy is all the more suggestive because one explanation for Italian conformity to the Nazi policy in this respect was that Hitler objected to the migration of German exiles into the domain of his ally. It is one more proof that conformity comes hard to Italy. Truly as the Italians keep reiterating the Brenner is a natural frontier.”
