Beginning February 4, 1929, a department for religious education will be introduced in the School of Education of New York University. An announcement to this effect was made by Dr. John W. Withers, dean of the school. Samuel L. Hamilton, formerly of the New Jersey Council of Religious Education, will head the new department.

Five courses will be offered. The courses are: 1.Introduction to religious education; 2. Principles of religious education; 3. Leadership in religious education; 4. Organization and administration; 5.Determination of the curriculum in religious education.

In explaining the purposes of the new department, Dean Withers said: “The university has started this department in the belief that the next great forward movement of the churches is in the field of religious education. We believe that systematic education in religion is an urgent need of our country at this time. Our unparalleled advance in science and industry and in material growth, we think, must be matched by advance in the moral and spiritual character of the people. New York University wishes to help meet this great need.”
