President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt is reported to have rejected out of hand a British proposal to re-establish the cease-fire in the Suez Canal zone. This rejection was contained in a “shock report” that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Joseph J. Sisco brought home to Washington from his recent “orientation tour” of the Middle East, according to a report in today’s Evening Standard. The proposal allegedly called for an exchange of Egyptian and Israeli declarations supporting the cease-fire. But Pres. Nasser told Mr. Sisco that he regarded the cease-fire as a means by which Israel could entrench itself along the canal. He said he would not adhere to it until the Israelis withdrew, the Standard reported.
