The Foreign Minister of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou, and the United Arab Republic Embassy in Cyprus, today denied reports that President Nasser of the UAR had warned the Cyprus Government against exchanging ambassadors with Israel.
The denials were issued in Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, following reports from Cairo that the United Arab Republic informed Archbishop Makarios, President of Cyprus, that an exchange of ambassadors between Cyprus and Israel would have “grave consequences.” The UAR was also reported as reminding the Cypriot President that 3,000 Cypriots still lived in Cairo.
