Italy’s invitation to President Nasser of the United Arab Republic was defended here today by Italian Foreign Minister Giuseppe Pella in the face of adverse criticism from political leaders and newspapers of every political shade except the Communist and Fascist extremes.

He asserted, too, that the visit would not drive a wedge into Western solidarity and insisted that Italy’s policy of friendship for Egypt, “where thousands of Italians reside,” is not imperialistic.
