An indication of the solidarity with which the Jews of America have rallied to combat the recent White Paper of the British Government announcing a new policy in Palestine was seen in the announcement at Zionist headquarters of the appointment of Nathan Straus, Jr., as vice-chairman of the Zionist Emergency Fund which has been launched to promote the activities against the British Colonial Office policy.
Inactive in the Zionist movement for a number of years, Mr. Straus, who has been devoting himself in the meantime to civic affairs felt that the situation demanded the active participation of every Jew in order to secure a reversal of the decision of the British government.
Calling upon all Jews, non-Zionists as well as Zionists, to aid the Zionist Emergency Fund, Mr. Straus declared :
“The most important duty which at this moment rests upon the Jews of America is to bring before the public opinion of the country the true facts in regard to the upbuilding of the Jewish National Home in Palestine. Both the report of Sir John Simpson and the White Paper prepared by Lord Passfield distort the achievements of the Jewish pioneers and cast a false light on the activities which have been carried on in the last decade.”
The officers of the Emergency Fund have been announced as follows: Dr. Stephen S. Wise, chairman; Nathan Straus, Jr., vice-chairman; Morris Weinberg treasurer; Jacob de Haas, Edward Friedman, Harry P. Fierst, Samuel Lamport, Abraham Liebovitz, Louis Lipsky, Israel Matz, I. D. Morrison, Emanuel Neumann, Louis Robison, Louis P. Rocker, S. J. Rosensohn, Jacob Siegel, Mrs. S. Rosenbloom, Sigmund Thau, Philip Wattenberg, and Joseph Weiss.
