The eighty-first anniversary of the birth of Nathan Straus. American Jewish philanthropist, was observed here last night at a reception given by Miss Henrietta Szold, American member of the Palestine Zionist Executive. Dr. John Haynes Holmes, pastor of the Community Church in New York, who came to Palestine as the representative of Mr. Straus, was the guest of honor.
In his address, Dr. Holmes characterized Mr. Straus’s philanthropy as many-sided and reconciling all races and creeds. “America claims Mr. Straus as a citizen, but he belongs not only to America but to the whole world. He came to Palestine first as a tourist, but felt the challenge and today his Palestione work symbolizes his international philanthropy,” Dr. Holmes declared.
Dr. Holmes came to Palestine to dedicate the Nathan and Lina Straus Health Center, the gift of Nathan Straus to the Hadassah, for the welfare of all Palestinian residents, regardless of race or creed. A cablegram of felicitations was despatched to Mr. Straus.
