General George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff of the United States Army has written to Mrs. Leah Levin, mother of the late Sergeant Meyer Levin of the Air Force, declaring that “the nation owes Sergeant Levin an everlasting debt of gratitude.”
“It was with deep regret that I learned of the death of your son in the Southwest Pacific area,” General Marshall wrote. “I realize that there is little that can be said to alleviate your grief, but I hope that you will derive some consolation in the knowledge that Meyer Levin served in the best traditions of the Army and of the American way of life.”
