Plans for the consolidation of the National Refugee Service and the service to foreign born department of the National Council of Jewish Women were announced here today by both organizations. The consolidation is designed to strengthen the services which have been provided by NRS and NCJW in aiding the immigration, economic and social adjustment and Americanization of the newcomers.
Consolidation of the two national services has received approval of the National Council of Jewish Women through a referendum of its 200 local sections throughout the country. It has been approved by the executive committee of the National Refugee Service, and will be submitted to the board of directors of that agency at a meeting to be held in New York City on June 9.
Details of the combined service and the date when it will commence operation will be announced after favorable action by the NRS board of directors. It is planned that the consolidated agency shall offer all the services provided at present by NRS and the national Service to Foreign Born of NCJW. Other national programs of the NCJW will not be affected by the consolidation, which was motivated by the desire of both organizations to contribute toward elimination of duplicating welfare services.
An immediate major task of the consolidated agency will be to furnish complete assistance to immigrants coming to this country under President Truman’s directive. The first contingent is now aboard the “Marine Flasher” which is due to arrive in New York on Monday.
