National U.J.A. Conference Opens in Washington; Ben Gurion, Kaplan Apeal for Aid

A regime of strict austerity will be introduced in Israel to coke possible large scale immigration and agricultural and industrial expansion, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion today declared in a message to the United Jewish Appeal national conference which open here tomorrow, with 1,200 delegates from all parts of the country in attendance.

Ben Gurion declared that “the country which our victorious army has liberated must speedily be rebuilt to receive all the Jews who wish to and must leave their present abode.” He called on the “great Jewish community of America to once again rise to the great occasion and crown with complete success this grand and glorious mission which has befallen our generation.”

The urgent need for large scale financial aid from the United States through the U.J.A. was underscored by Eliezer Kaplan, Finance Minister of Israel, in another message to Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman of the U.J.A. Kaplan disclosed that the Jewish Agency is spending more than a million dollars a month to maintain 40,OOO new immigrants in 21 reception camps.

Among speakers scheduled to address sessions are Moshe Sharett, Foreign Minister of Israel, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Charles F. Brannan, former Gov. Herbert H. Lehman, and Eliahu Elath, Israeli Ambassador to the United States.
