Habib Bourguiba, leader of the nationalist Neo-Destour Party of Tunis, appealed today to the Moslem population to halt attacks on Jews and not to sack their stores. M. Bourguiba has made consistently pro-Jewish statements since his return from exile recently when the nationalist movement won an agreement for greater autonomy from France.
Today’s appeal followed a number of recent incidents in which Jews have been injured and Jewish stores have been looted by Moslem gangs. Yesterday, a mob of unemployed Moslems attempted to loot Jewish stores in the native quarter. Police were called and two Moslems and a Jewish boy were wounded when police used gunfire to disperse the mob which had turned on them.
