Deputy Knesset Speaker Itzhak Navon officially withdrew from the Presidential race yesterday and urged his backers to desist from any further activity on his behalf. Navon lost the Labor Party’s nomination to Prof. Ephraim Katchalski of the Weizmann Institute of Science who seems assured of victory when the Knesset votes for Israel’s new President April 10.
Navon said he no longer views himself as a candidate. He urged his supporters to avoid demonstrations such as those held recently by some university students who tried to rally grass roots support for the Knesset leader.
