President Yitzhak Navon and his wife, Ofira, have been meeting with leading Israeli academic experts and top officials and diplomats familiar with Egypt as part of their preparations for a five-day state visit in Egypt Oct. 26-30.
While the schedule envisages a great deal of touring and sightseeing, and while Navon is not a politically active figure in Israel, the visit will nevertheless include meetings with many of Egypt’s top political echelon.
Talks are set with President Anwar Sadat himself, with Vice President Hosni. Mubarak, National Assembly Speaker Suffi. Abu-Taleb, Deputy Premier Fuhi Muhiaddin, Information Minister Mansour Hassan and Former Premier Mustapha Khalil.
The Navons will be welcomed at Cairo Airport by Sadat and his wife, Jihan, and will later be their guests at a state dinner, to which they will reciprocate, as is the diplomatic practice, with a dinner of their own.
On the first day, Navon will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. His itinerary also includes a visit to the Cairo Synagogue, and a visit to Sadat’s birthplace, the village of Mit Abul Kom. Navon will also call at the Israeli Embassy in Cairo and he and his wife will fly to the archaeological sites of upper Egypt.
Ofira will visit rehabilitation institutes, escorted by Jihan. She will also meet with women MPs and women journalists. Among the people the Navons will be taking with them is Raya Jaglom, the president of WIZO.
