At a religious and military ceremony yesterday the U.S. Navy presented a torah used for four years at the Newport naval training station to the Touro Synagogue here. The synagogue was recently declared a national historic shrine by the Department of Interior.
The torah was presented by Chaplain Benjamin Kreitman to Dr. Bernard Friedman, president of the synagogue, and Rabbi Jules Lipschutz, its spiritual leader. Rabbi David DeSola Pool, chairman of the Army-Navy Religious Activities Committee of the National Jewish Welfare Board, was the guest speaker at the ceremony.
