The memory of the late Samuel Gompers, founder of the American Federation of Labor, will be honored on Labor Day by the launching of a Liberty ship which will carry his name, it was announced here today.
A vessel of the destroyer type will be named after the late Ensign Ira Weil Jeffery, of Minneapolis, who died in action while aboard an American battleship during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Navy Department also announced. Secretary Knox honored Jeffery in a posthumous citation for his “distinguished devotion to duty and extraordinary courage and disregard of his own safety during the attack on the fleet in Pearl Harbor.”
