More than 10,000 Turkish Jews in France are threatened by the German occupation authorities with deportation to occupied eastern Europe, it was reported here today from Ankara.
The Jews are said to have lost their Turkish citizenship through failure to register with the Turkish consulates. Many of them are Turkish-born. No indication is given as to whether the Turkish authorities intend to intervene in their behalf.
The German threat against Jews of Turkish origin in France is interpreted here to mean that Germany is expecting Turkey to join the Allies as soon as the Allied invasion is launched. Turkish Jews in France have not been molested by the Germans heretofore, irrespective of whether their identification documents were registered with the Turkish consulate in Paris or any other French city.
Another report reaching here today from Turkey states that the Turkish authorities are endeavoring to protect their Jewish nationals in Bulgaria and in occupied Yugoslavia where there are estimated to be several thousand Turkish Jews.
