Declaring that he feels “deeply ashamed when he thinks of the sufferings caused his Jewish fellow-citizens as a result of the bestiality and sadism of the so-called Catholic Slovak Government,” Monsignor Pavel Machacek, Vice-President of the Czechoslovakian State Council, today broadcast a “last warning” to the people of Slovakia to disassociate themselves from “the government appointed by the pagan Hitler.”
“It is impossible to simultaneously serve God and the devil, and it is impossible to be a good Christian and an anti-Semite at the same time,” Monsignor Machacek stated, adding that he make his protest in the name of Catholicism as well as for the sake of the Slovak people. “What has been done to Slovakian Jewry by the Bratislava Government is worse than what Herod once did to the Jews,” the Slovak prelate continued.
Addressing himself to the puppet government of President Tiso, he said: “I do not appeal to your conscience and humanity because you do not possess any, but I hold you responsible before God and the Slovak people for what you are doing to these innocent citizens. I call upon you for the last time to desist from these devilish deeds. God’s punishment and the vengeance of the Slovak people will fall upon you mercilessly. Every supporter of anti-Semitism supports Nazism because the anti-Semitic poison is the driving force behind the Nazi power politics which have brought European civilization to the brink of destruction.”
