More than 1,500,000 Jews were exterminated by the Nazis in Byelorussia during their occupation there, it was revealed today in a report released by the Soviet Jewish Information Bureau.
The report said that “of the 1,800,000 Jews who lived in Byelorussia before the war, there are now only about 300,000.” It emphasized that the terror practiced by the Nazis in such cities as Minsk, Gomal, Vitebsk, Polotsk, Orsha and in other towns in Byelorussia, “are beyond human imagination.”
The report added that large-scale rehabilitation work is now being conducted by the surviving Jewish and non-Jewish population in Byelorussia, and that similar work is going on in Lithuania, especially in the cities of Vilna, Kaunas, Klapeida, Shavli and Ponievezh.
