Der Angriff, organ of Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Gobbles, today commented on the Evian refugee-aid conference by attacking “Roosevelt’s Eviangelism” and declaring that the President’s move to aid exiles was a mere election act to attract the votes of “the considerable groups comprising the American Jews, whose voices and money carry weight.”
The article further assails the merging of the Austrian and German immigration quotas by the United States as “an empty and hypocritical gesture” since 80 per cent of the Austrian Jews are not Austrian-born and cannot be included in the quotas.
The Angriff labels the Evian meeting a gathering of anti-Fascists’ “moral condemnation,” and declares that it is nothing but a link in “the chain of tragic attempts to Balfourize the Jewish problem.” (The reference is evidently to Lord Balfour, Britain’s wartime Foreign Secretary, whose Balfour Declaration promised the Jews a national homeland in Palestine.)
