What may be regarded as a defensive and somewhat apologetic editorial on the Jewish question is featured in today’s issue of the Voelkischer Beobachter, Adolf Hitler’s own newspaper.
“Germany,” the editorial says in effect, “doesn’t worry as to how the Jews interpret the racial policy of the National Socialist party. However, Germany wouldn’t like other races to think it discriminates against them.”
The Beobachter then points out that racial animosity exists in England, where it is directed against its colonials, and also in America, where its object is the Negroes. Nevertheless, the writer complains, nobody misunderstands these countries, while with respect to Germany the race question is used as an issue.
The Beobachter concludes its editorial with assurances that other races are being fully respected in Germany, but carefully avoids saying the same for the Jews.
