German newspapers greeted with enthusiasm today the racial decrees adopted by the Fascist Grand Council in Italy, large headlines emphasizing their similarity to the Reich’s anti-Jewish laws.
Typical of the headlines over the dispatches reporting the decree was this, in the Abendausgabe: “Italy Issues Law on Jews Patterned After Nuremberg.” The B.Z. Am Mittag declared: “Next to the Duce, similarly well informed observers of the German race and politics such as farinacci and Ciano took a leading part in the five-hour discussion of the race question.”
On the other hand, Der Angriff, organ of Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels, placed the rome story on an inside page, a carefully worded article bearing the headline: “Explanation of the Grand Council on the Race Question.”
