That strong pressure is being exerted by the Nazis to swing the new Hungarian Cabinet to an anti-Jewish policy is indicated by identical reports published in many newspapers and apparently emanating from the Ministry of Propaganda.
Describing a “struggle” between Nationalists on one hand and Jews, liberals and monarchists on the other, which followed the death of Premier Goemboes, the reports said:
“There can be no doubt that the Jewish problem is becoming more and more acute and it will be the fatal question for the Daranyi cabinet.
Admitting that the “National counter-forces against Jewry” are split, with 85 of 165 Government deputies classed as “radical rightists,” the reports continue:
“There are no indications yet with regard to the future attitude of the Government to the Jewish problem. Without doubt the cabinet is without exception National-Christian-Conservative, and in its conception anti-Jewish. We must, however, wait to see whether the Government will find the strength to assume the leadership of the national movement and to carry out Goemboes’ great national work of reform.”
